Our Approach

Ahmedabad International Airport Ltd. (AIAL) integrates sustainability at every level of its operations and decision-making. A dedicated Environment and Sustainability Department, supported by cross-functional teams, oversees the implementation of a comprehensive ESG strategy. It focuses on environmental responsibility, social impact, and long-term value through a strong governance framework, reinforcing AIAL’s commitment to sustainable development and holistic growth.

Sustainability Stories

Climate Change

Climate action is an integral part of AIAL’s sustainability efforts. Its carbon reduction targets align with India’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070 and the Paris Agreement's aim to limit global warming to below 2°C, while striving towards the 1.5°C target. In FY 2024-25, SVPIA saved 1197 tonnes of CO2 through energy and carbon emission saving initiatives.

Water Management

To reduce water wastage and encourage sustainable consumption, a cloud-based irrigation system has been implemented across 17 acres of green area at SVPIA. A top-of-the-line smart system was adopted, which uses real-time weather data and evapotranspiration rates to automate irrigation. This innovation is expected to save approximately 17,850 kilolitres of water annually. It also supports healthier plant growth by delivering precise amounts of water and allows remote monitoring and control for timely adjustments, thus considerably cutting down on water wastage.

Waste Management

AIAL’s waste management approach is aligned with the Waste Management Policy of Adani Airport Holdings Limited (AAHL), focusing on the 5R principles— Reduce, Reuse, Reprocess, Recycle, and Recover. Waste is managed through five stages at a dedicated Material Recovery Facility, ensuring compliance with national regulations. Organic waste generated at the airport is converted into manure in our in-house organic waste composter facility (OWC) (500 kg/day). AIAL achieved the Zero Waste to Landfill (ZWL) recognition from the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) by diverting 99.5 percent waste from landfill.

 

Fleet Decarbonization

AIAL is actively transforming airport mobility by accelerating the shift to eco-friendly transportation. By the end of FY 2025, AIAL successfully transitioned 38 fossil fuel-based vehicles to electric vehicles (EVs). To support this transition, the airport has also installed eight EV charging stations across its premises. One of our key airlines, Indigo, has converted 100 percent of its bus fleet into electric buses.

Land Use and Biodiversity

AIAL’s ESG strategy also focuses on land use and biodiversity preservation. Under the Adani group’s pledge on World Economic Forum’s 1t.org platform, AIAL planted 3,902 trees in 2024-25. Our biodiversity management strategy is aligned with AAHL’s biodiversity policy of being committed to no net loss to biodiversity.

Airport Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF)

The ARFF team at SVPIA plays a critical role in ensuring passenger and aircraft safety during emergencies. Equipped with cutting-edge firefighting vehicles and rescue tools, they respond swiftly to emergencies, conduct regular drills, and coordinate with national agencies to protect lives and aircraft.

Adani Vision Care Program

Community development is an important commitment at AIAL. Working in collaboration with the Adani foundation, AIAL focused on bringing free vision care to children in a nearby community in need. Free eye screenings and spectacle distribution drives were organised across six schools. They were successful in providing premium eye care to 1,184 children with over 100 spectacles given to those in need.
